Gravesend
Gravesend is a residential neighborhood in south Brooklyn near Coney Island which was developed on marshland and sand dunes. In the 1600’s it was home to Dutch farmers. During the late 1800’s with coney Island as a popular vacation spot, Gravesend was a resort town with three racetracks. But by the first decade of the 1900’s the racetracks closed and Gravesend became a quiet middle class neighborhood.
Today it remains a humble, family friendly neighborhood away from all the action. Activity picks up a bit in the summer with Coney Island beach & amusement park in season. Gravesend has all the conveniences of any suburb, though entertainment options are relatively limited. Food shops are reflective of a diverse population. L&B Spumoni Gardens is a very popular old neighborhood Italian restaurant with thousands of rave reviews, famous for their Sicilian slices & Spumoni ice cream.
It is somewhat of a mystery where the name Gravesend came from. Some residents have proposed to change the name but so far the name remains. Makes the place sound like some kind of graveyard.
